Helping Your Child Ease Testing Anxiety
It is completely normal for students to feel some pressure around testing. In fact, most students feel it. The goal is not to eliminate those feelings, but to help students manage them in healthy ways.
Here are simple, proven strategies families can use:
The Night Before:
Ensure your child gets a full night of sleep (8–10 hours for elementary students)
Prepare clothes, backpack, and materials ahead of time
Keep the evening calm and predictable
The Morning Of:
Provide a healthy breakfast with protein (eggs, yogurt, peanut butter)
Use encouraging language such as:
“Just do your best.”
“You’ve been learning all year for this.”
Avoid rushing—build in a few extra minutes
Simple Anxiety-Reducing Techniques
Teach your child one or two of these easy strategies:
Deep breathing: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4
Positive self-talk: “I can do this” or “I will try my best”
Focus strategy: Read each question carefully and take it one step at a time
Your partnership makes all the difference. By helping your child arrive on time and with a calm mindset, you are setting them up for success before they even open the test booklet.
